Every Fourth of July in the small town
of Brookhaven, Mississippi someone is crowned Miss Firecracker and Carnelle Scott is determined to win. Known throughout town as ‘Miss Hot Tamale,’ she’s out to change everyone’s perception of her so she can leave town in a blaze of glory. Together with her quirky friend Popeye and erratic duo of cousins, Elain and Delmount, she braves the odds to prove the world wrong.

The Miss Firecracker Contest is an American classic filled with heart and hilarity that will have you rooting for the underdog.

“The Miss Firecracker Contest” is an amusing satirical take on the politics of beauty contests in general. In this social climate, that’s something that should be applauded.

It’s like your favorite Southern relatives come for a visit. You’ll chuckle and belly-laugh your way through their stories. But listen closely, and you begin to see that each of those amusing relatives are tilted just a bit off their axis.

Cochrane invites us to sympathize with, and feel affection for, these somewhat cartoonish figures while also heartily laughing at their absurd foibles.
