The wit and wisdom of Noel Coward glimmer again in this much-loved drawing room spirit game. Subtitled “An Impossible Farce” by Coward, Blithe Spirit presents novelist Charles Condomine torn between two lovers: one dead, and one alive. At the top of the play, Charles and his wife, Ruth, are preparing for a dinner party with a medium, Madame Arcati, as research for Charles’ newest novel, The Unseen. What should be an amusing evening of observation turns on its head when the unlikely Arcati inadvertently resurrects Charles’ first wife – Elvira. Only seen by Charles, Elvira is soon creating trouble between Charles and Ruth. The improbabilities continue to unfold in Coward’s most hilarious comedy, as one seance leads to another, resurrections lead to deaths, and adages like “until death do us part” and “parting is such sweet sorrow” are taken to new heights.
